The Sidney Prize For Undergraduate Fiction

The Sidney prize is a literary award given each year by the Australian magazine Overland to a short story writer. The prize was first awarded in 2023 and is worth $5000 for the winning entry and $750 each for the two runners-up. The winning entry will be published in Overland’s autumn issue, and the runners-up stories will also be published online.

The prize is named after Sir Sidney Hollander (1881-1972), a prominent Baltimore businessman who devoted his time and wealth to social activism and reform. Hollander was an officer and board member of numerous philanthropic and community organizations, and he was involved in civic affairs at both the local and national level.

A few years ago, Helen Andrews was on a panel about conservatism with her ex-boyfriend Todd Seavey, who went off on a diatribe about how cruel she was. It was so vicious that it ended up being televised on C-Span. Andrews was able to laugh off the incident, but it was an eye-opening moment for her. She realized that she had been a victim of something called “sidneying,” a form of online bullying.

In order to perpetuate in some small way the generative influence that the late Sidney Cox exercised on hundreds of Dartmouth students both in and out of his classes, a group of his friends has been soliciting funds with a view to establishing an annual prize for that piece of undergraduate writing which comes nearest to the high standards of originality and integrity which he set for himself and his students. Some $1500 has already been received and additional contributions are encouraged, particularly from men who were his friends. Checks should be made payable to the Committee and sent to 1 Occom Ridge in Hanover.

The 2024 Sydney Peace Prize will be presented to Nazanin Boniadi, a human rights and women’s rights activist in Iran who is helping to turn outrage into action by working for the overthrow of the regime. “On behalf of the City of Sydney, I congratulate Nazanin for her long-time fight for justice,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore. “We are pleased to be able to support the work of the Sydney Peace Foundation and their efforts to promote peace with justice.”
